BRIEF SUMMARY:
Fujioka Kota (Ono Satoshi) who lives in a local
town in the countryside dropped out of university, has nothing to recommend
himself and no passion to offer too. He is a typical, ordinary young man. He has
somehow lived, surrounded by a loving family. His father Kenjiro (Miura Tomokazu)
is a pillar of strength who always watches over him; his kind-hearted mother
Yasuko (Kishimoto Kayoko) takes care of the family’s health through homemade
dishes; and his older sister Koharu (Mimura) is the life of the family. There is
something that Kota finally thinks of trying. It is cooking. He wants to feed
people with delicious food that he prepares. So he starts working at a
restaurant as an apprentice cook.
His relationship with his girlfriend Tanabe Etsuko
(Kimura Fumino) is also progressing well. Then one day, Kota suddenly collapses
and is sent to hospital. He is diagnosed by the doctor (Shimada Kyusaku) as
having malignant lymphoma. In other words, cancer of the blood. It is difficult
for Kota realise what cancer is, but it completely transforms the lives of
himself and his family. The treatments, which are beyond his imagining, start to
create a sense of distance between Kota and Etsuko as well as Kota and his
family. He thinks that it is his own fault that the important things have come
apart. During his painful stay in hospital, the encounters which Kota has
transforms his life as well as the lives of the people around him. One youth
Harada Nobuo (Yamada Ryosuke) developed an illness in childhood and has spent
much of his life in hospital and seen many deaths. There is also the man Kokyuu-san
(Agata Morio) who continuously does strange exercises on the rooftop of the
hospital everyday. One woman Okubo Yuriko (Fukada Kyoko) is a counsellor who
works at the hospital but there is some shadow hanging over her. Something
inside Kota begins to change through these encounters. Tolerating the anticancer
drug treatment, he beats the cancer. However, he has a relapse and is given
three months to live. His family continues to give him support through this
trying period. Knowing that he does not have much time left, Kota decides to
live and die well -jdramaweblog
