BRIEF SUMMARY:  Suzuki Hajime (Sakai Masato), a brilliant medical scientist specialising in reproductive treatment, made a groundbreaking discovery in cloning technology at Koto University’s life sciences research lab where he worked seven years ago. However, he met strong opposition from his superior Sakakibara Michitaka (Ibu Masato), the president of Koto University, because of ethical issues. They clashed and he was ousted from the research lab. Seven years later, Suzuki has become a doctor at a small clinic in a town in Ibaraki Prefecture. Using a private investigator, he finally learns that Tashiro Megumi (Ito Ayumi) whom he has been searching for for more than six years has fallen to her death. But the only thing he asks is, “Does Tashiro Megumi have a child?” Megumi has a 6-year-old son Shinji, and her younger sister Natsumi (Ono Machiko), a magazine writer, who has been out of touch with the free-spirited Megumi for close to 10 years has taken the boy into her care. Unable to adjust to a sudden life with her sister’s son and given her own financial situation, Natsumi deposits Shinji with Suzuki who identified himself as the boy’s father at the hospital. However, she feels uncomfortable about Suzuki’s fixation with Shinji and decides to accompany him. Meanwhile, Assistant Inspector Kuroiwa Tadatsugu (Takahashi Katsumi) of the Kanagawa Prefectural Police’s First Investigative Division who is in charge of Megumi’s case, suspects her death was murder and not suicide, and focuses his attention on Suzuki too. Sakakibara who gives Kuroiwa an audience regarding Suzuki, is shocked to learn of Shinji’s existence.
